As part of a residency at raum on demand at the Alte Münze, I chose to work on a district of Berlin that was the first nucleus of the city: The Fischerinsel.
This project reminds me of my early years in Berlin, when I roamed the city with my camera and was, like many others, fascinated by the undefined open spaces, abandoned buildings and wastelands. Traces of history, like voids, in-between spaces in the city, these places have disappeared to make way for a totally different urban landscape. It’s a work on the memory of a city in constant mutation.
These photographs are then reworked, with the addition of a white rectangle, echoing the No Man’s Lands these buildings have replaced, and a hand-drawn line, as a metaphor for a link between past and present.
Dans le cadre d’une résidence à raum on demand à la Alte Münze, j’ai choisi de travailler sur un quartier de Berlin, qui a été le premier noyau de la ville: La Fischerinsel.
Ce projet me rappelle mes premières années à Berlin, lorsque je parcourais la ville avec mon appareil photo et que j’étais, comme beaucoup d’autres, fasciné par les espaces libres indéfinis, les bâtiments abandonnés et les terrains vagues. Traces d’une Histoire, comme des vides, des espaces d’entre deux dans la ville, ces lieux ont disparu pour laisser place à un paysage urbain totalement différent. C’est un travail sur la mémoire d’une ville en constante mutation.
Ces photographies sont ensuite retravaillées, avec l’ajout d’un rectangle blanc, en écho aux No Man’s Lands que ces bâtiments ont remplacés, et d’une ligne dessinée à la main, comme métaphore d’un lien entre le passé et le présent.
