In recent years, our topography has changed dramatically, a change due to the transformation of certain continents. Reminding us of the ephemeral nature of all things and of the relationship of cause and effect on our ecosystem, this work transmits a delicate and fragile vision of our environment.
This representation, which uses cartography and aerial photography, finds its starting point in an atlas of images “Biology of the plant cell”. The images presented there have a beauty and graphic complexity, which inspired this project.
With this idea of reproducing the same kind of graphic quality, I started experimenting with pigments. The pigment is spread on an aqueous form from which, after evaporation and removal of some of the pigment with a brush, a form emerges, close to a drawing of a continent. The process of realization echoes a natural phenomenon, that of evaporation, of the transformation of water into air, to leave a visible residue…
Blue like water. The water of the oceans is full of stories and legends,
from which emerge continents and islands.
Unknown lands.
The water withdraws, leaves room for deserts and becomes rare like a precious stone.
The spectator is invited to discover these imaginary cartographies through binoculars. This imposes a certain physical distance, but does not prevent the relationship with the material and the detail, letting a new world appear.
This project is articulated in two parts, a series of 6 to 10 spheres and a panoramic image.
Both have to be realized on site. Moreover, the works exist for the time of the exhibition and are then returned to their ephemeral character, that of disappeared continents.
Cartography is fascinating, ambivalent, it contains in its representation all kinds of places and spaces. Like an organic being it is constantly changing and is redrawn with every change. The map is both an archive and a means of locating a place. But this same representation remains incomplete, as it says little or nothing about the histories of its places.
It leaves us free to fill in the blanks and imagine its landscapes, its moods, its colors.
Ces dernières années, notre topographie a changé de manière spectaculaire, un changement dû à la transformation de certains continents. Nous rappelant la nature éphémère de toutes choses et du rapport de cause à effet sur notre écosystème, ce travail transmet une vision délicate et fragile de notre environnement.
Cette représentation, qui fait appel à la cartographie ou encore à la photographie aérienne, trouve son point de départ dans un atlas d’images “Biologie de la cellule végétale”. Ces images qui y sont présentées ont une beauté et complexité graphique, qui a inspiré ce projet.
Avec cette idée de reproduire le même type de qualité graphique, j’ai commencé à expérimenter avec des pigments. Le pigment est répandu sur une forme aqueuse à partir de laquelle, après évaporation et élimination d’une partie du pigment à l’aide d’un pinceau, émerge une forme, proche d’un dessin de continent. Le processus de réalisation fait écho à un phénomène naturelle, celui de l’évaporation, de la transformation de l’eau en air, pour laisser visible un résidu…
Bleu comme l’eau. L’eau des océans est pleine d’histoires et de légendes, d’où émergent les continents et les îles. Des terres inconnues. L’eau se retire, laisse place aux déserts et devient rare comme une pierre précieuse.
Le spectateur est invité à découvrir ces cartographies imaginaires à travers des jumelles. Cela impose une une certaine distance physique, mais n’empêche pas la relation avec le matériau et le détail, laissant apparaître un nouveau monde.
Ce projet s‘articule en deux parties, une série de 6 à 10 sphères et d’une image panoramique.
Toutes deux se doivent d’être réalisées sur place. Par ailleurs les œuvres existent pour le temps de l’exposition et sont ensuite rendu à leurs caractères éphémères, celui de continents disparus.
La cartographie est fascinante, ambivalente, elle contient dans sa représentation toutes sortes de lieux et d‘espaces. Comme un être organique elle se transforme constamment et est redessinée à chaque changement. La carte est à la fois une archive et un moyen de localiser un emplacement. Mais cette même représentation reste incomplète, car elle ne dit rien ou peu des histoires de ses lieux.
Elle nous laisse ainsi la liberté de combler les vides et d‘imaginer ses paysages, ses ambiances, ses couleurs.
