“When a Line goes for a Walk”

The artist Elma Riza proposes in this video an approach to walking in its duration. From one season to the next she pulls a thread behind her, crossing the landscapes of Brandenburg (Germany). The viewer is invited to share this continuity, this cycle of a never-ending walk, where the white thread draws a tangible line, in an environment in constant transformation.
“The title of this work is a phrase from Tim Ingold’s book “A Brief History of Lines”, published in 2011 as a tribute to his work that has inspired me since 2014.
Since then, I have explored the spatial possibilities of this simple yet complex element: the line connects, delimits, separates – all of which have informed my performative work.
In this work, the line is also a trace of my journey through the landscape, a white line that redraws a landscape in movement.
I decided to shoot this video in the forests of the Uckermark, more than 50% of which are pine. This landscape will be the first in the Berlin-Brandenburg region to be transformed. It is a way to immortalize in images a fauna that is disappearing.” E.R.
This video won the Female Voice Award at the video festival “Berlin Minute Festival” in September 2022.
L’artiste Elma Riza propose dans cette vidéo une approche de la marche dans sa durée. D’une saison à l’autre elle tire un fils derrière elle, traversant les paysages de Brandenburg (Allemagne). Le spectateur est invité à partager cette continuité, ce cycle d’une marche sans fin, où le fils blanc dessine une ligne tangible, dans un environnement en constante transformation.
«Le titre de ce travail est une phrase tirée du livre de Tim Ingold “Une brève histoire des lignes”, publié en 2011 en hommage à son œuvre qui m’inspire depuis 2014.
Depuis, j’ai exploré les possibilités spatiales de cet élément à la fois simple et complexe: la ligne relie, délimite, sépare – tous ces aspects ont nourri mon travail performatif.
Dans ce travail, la ligne est aussi une trace de mon parcours à travers le paysage, un trait blanc qui redessine un paysage en mouvement.
J’ai décidé de tourner cette vidéo dans les forêts de l’Uckermark, composées à plus de 50% de pins. Ce paysage sera le premier de la région de Berlin-Brandebourg à se transformer. C’est une façon d’immortaliser en images une faune en voie de disparition.» E.R.
